Robert Eugene Matthews, Jr., affectionately known as Bobby was born on July 6, 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Robert Sr. and Lizzie Matthews.  He confessed his life to Christ at an early age at Pilgrim Home Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his health began to fail.  He served in many capacities at the church including Chairman of the Deacon Board, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher.

He was educated in the Birmingham City School System and graduated from Carol W. Hayes High School in 1965.   He attended Stillman College for one year then transferred to Miles College where he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science and Secondary Education.  He later went on to receive a Master of Education in 1977 from The Alabama State University.  In 1969, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for two years during the Vietnam War as a Medic.

He began his career as an Alabama State Trooper where he served for 10 years.  After serving as a Trooper, he worked with the Department of Youth Services for 40 plus years until he retired February 1, 2021.
